good luck sukajan

320.00

A sukajan or 'souvenir jacket' takes its name from Post WWII Japan, when American soldiers would commission ornate embroideries on their jackets to commemorate their time overseas. In this unique fusion of cultures, Japanese dragons can intertwine with American eagles amongst cherry blossoms and military iconography. These oriental souvenirs have captivated designers and inspired collections from Gucci and Louis Vuitton.

This rare and unique sukajan is embroidered with morning glory flowers and miniature japanese tree frogs in greens, blues and teals. The frog was used as a symbol of good luck for travellers during long voyages, which is probably why they have been embellished onto this souvenir jacket. The japanese word for frog is 'kaeru' which is the same as the word for 'return' and so carrying a frog symbol would help the traveller to return home safely.

This jacket is reversible and heavily embellished with complimentary embroideries on both sides and can be worn either way. The pale lilac side has a full back embroidery of little tree frogs amongst opening flowers with a woven background pattern. The other silky 'bomber' style reverse has subtle trailing embroidery of frogs amongst leaves and tendrils with embroidred pocket details.  Despite its age this sukajan is in perfect condition - contact us for more details.
